The second thing you experience is a sense of pressure as you realize “Holy crap! This is a someone who has daily first-hand experience with the finest the wedding industry has to offer!! We’ve got to come up with something new and amazing that she’s never seen before!! Something….dramatic….”   So, with a little help from the weather, that’s what we set out to do.

Jamie from Salt Lake’s FABULOUS Alta Moda Bridal is one of those amazingly cool and relaxed brides that just makes me thankful for my job. She put her faith in my instincts/vision and trusted that whatever I was asking her to do would make her look great (even if she may have felt stupid doing it on occasion) – and with a cold no less! She was a trooper, as the kids these days are fond of saying (I’m so in touch with the younger generation).

When the day came it was a stormy one. While we waited for the rain to subside we did a couple of setups in our Über-cool Studio®. I really love the spontaneity and sense of exploration that location shooting engenders, but a well-appointed studio gives you amazingly fine-grain control over the lighting. The word I was exploring on this day was ‘theatrical’.

When the rain finally broke we headed out for a little architectural feature that I’d had my eye on for a while – this funky little concrete outcropping. Clients often focus on location as the most critical element of an engagement or bridal shoot, but the truth is that light is by far the most important element. This was set at the edge of the parking lot of a community rec center and upon hearing that, there are probably pretty few clients who would have been excited about it. But with the right light….

I really love the editorial nature of this shot – the hunt for the elusive perfect shoes.
