Brian’s Proposal | Park City Wedding Photographer

A couple weeks ago, Brian flew his girlfriend Leslie out to Park City for a week of skiing and her birthday celebration. He also had planned to propose to her on her birthday, but she had no idea. Since Leslie is a photographer herself back in Alabama where the couple is from, he knew how important it would be to her to have photographs of the event.

Brian searched the wedding photographers in our area and decided I was the perfect person to capture the special moment. We planned the whole day out and it all went off without a hitch. I met them in Atticus a great little coffee and tea book store where I told them i was just shooting some promotional images for the store. She totally bought it.

After they relaxed with some warm beverages, they headed across the street to the town lift where the proposal was to happen. I stealthily followed behind, I was totally a super secret agent. The moment Brian went down on his knee, I got all teary and a little bit shakey, I was so nervous for him. She of course said “yes!” and I gave them a little more time before I popped out and let her know I was in on it. She was so excited and suprised, it was wonderful!!

From there, we went around Park City for an engagement shoot. Leslie was so great because she already knew how to hold herself and be comfortable in front of the camera. Brian wasn’t finished with the surprises yet, he had arranged to take his best girl on horse drawn sleigh ride and finish the day with a fireside table for dinner at the Goldener Hirsch at Deer Valley. So romantic right!?

Thank you so so much Brian for arranging such a magical day! I loved capturing such a wonderful day for the two of you, and I hope our paths will cross again if you two make it out to Park City again! Good Luck with the Wedding!!! L, Logan

I had such a fun time playing in the snow up in Park City with Kim and Ray. They were up for tromping through the snow, getting wet socks and all, but I think the image we got was so worth it! I just love aspen trees year round, there isn’t a season in which they don’t look awesome.

Kim and Ray just look perfect framed among all of those black and white trunks. Thanks Kim and Ray for being such great sports in the wet snow!

Ok – on to the the reception!

After the reception, Elise & Russ returned to the vaunted Stein Eriksen Lodge in Deer Valley to escape
from their guests for a few precious moments.

They didn’t have as much luck escaping from their photographers, however…

M’WA HA HA HA HA HA!

Event design & coordination was by Soirée Productions.
Soirée always sets the perfect mood!

And the floral design, including these dramatic black branchwork with crystal ‘icicles’, was by
StellaPosy Urban Floral Design

Elise & Russ both ride, and so the cake featured a custom topper with his & her softtails!

It had crazy amounts of detail, including these tiny little cans dragging behind the Harley’s.

Park City Community Church Wedding | Elise & Russ – Part 1

Elise & Russ both work for an airline – he a pilot and she in management. In fact they met while Russ was representing the labor union…across the negotiating table from each other. I was going to say something here about politics making for strange bed-fellows but I totally restrained myself. Whew, that was close!

So where do two Phoenix-based jet-setters that get free air-fare to anywhere in the world decide to have their wedding?

Beautiful Park City, of course!

Ryan and I had the privilege of shooting this great couple a few weeks ago. Here’s part 1 – part 2 on Saturday.

I’m sorry guys, I don’t have any info on the dress. I know, I’m falling down on the job here, right?!

I don’t know the story behind these nor do I know their meaning. I just likes me some rubber ducks is all.

Oh that’s what tulips are for.

Meanwhile, back with the groomsmen…

Again, I don’t know the story behind this, but this was the coolest (and grumpiest) flask I’ve ever seen!

And then on to the church!

In this case, the lovely Park City Community Church.

They should be careful… …people might say they’re in love.

Sundance Winter Wedding Album | McCall & Ryan

Well since we’re stuck here in winter for a few more weeks we might as well celebrate it. I can’t think of a better way than to share this gorgeous album from McCall & Ryan’s December sealing the Salt Lake Temple that culminated in a stunning winter reception at Sundance Resort!

McCall had a lot of images to pare it down from: we did an engagement session, a bridal AND groomal session, the temple sealing and the reception. The only thing to do was go BIG! So here we have a 12×16 inch, 100-side beauty dolled up in McCall’s own inspired combination of gold ostrich and copper metallic leathers. As beautiful as it looks here, this album really needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Its positively decadent!

I really loved this touch – they gave out little evergreen seedlings in these cute tubes as favors
and asked everyone to plant it in their honor. Pretty cool.

BIG Texas connection in this family. Accordingly, both bridesmaids….

…and flower girl were appropriately attired.

Their first dance was accompanied by either a bubble machine that malfunctioned
OR
a foam machine that was set to extra chunky.

I never really did get an answer about which it was but intended or not,
it was really cool, and it sure made for some cool photos!

At the end of the evening McCall & Ryan bundled up in many layers, to stay warm…

…and also to provide some protection from the celebratory pelting that they underwent on the way to their ride…

…a handsome cab pulled by this beautiful Fresian…or perhaps a Percheron?
[ I don't really know but I know for certain that I have at least one helpful friend who will make a point of
correcting me...publically...if I get it wrong. You know who you are. ]

So how do you say thank you to parents who spring for such an amazing event for you?

Why with a replica album just for them, of course. Scaled down to 8×10 of course.

We are again honored to have a six-page feature in the hot-off-the-presses 2010 edition of Utah Bride & Groom Magazine !

This time around its Kim and Sean’s spectacular Fourth o’ July a-hitchin’ at Johnson Mill. Kym wore an Atelier Aimee gown from Alta Moda Bridal with a very cool handmade purse by Leigh-Ann Kline. Flowers were by Basket of Gold, music was by Kim’s son Adrian’s band (they rocked it), and the fireworks were provided courtesy of the Heber City Chamber of Commerce (though admittedly they probably had another occasion in mind…).

Go get your copy of Utah Bride & Groom, wherever better local bridal magazines are sold. ;)

Wedding at The Canyons Resort | Allison & Drew | ZumaPhoto

I don’t think I’ve ever been inundated with so many questions about when a wedding post would going up as I have about Allison & Drew’s! Ever since I posted their engagement session (with special guest, Gracie), I’ve been getting it at every turn – email, phone calls, Facebook, carrier pigeon – all wanting to know when we might see this amazing couple’s wedding day. Well, never let it be said that I don’t cave into peer pressure. Be warned though – this is easily the longest post we’ve ever done (you might want to grab a snack). So without further ado I give you Allison & Drew (and yes, Gracie) at The Canyon Resort’s mountain-top Red Pine Lodge…one of my favorite places to shoot!

And what is Gracie’s reward for putting up with all of this pageantry?

BUNNY!!!!!!

Oh, and a card. BUT BUNNY!!!!!

Meanwhile, back in Allison’s room…

Fliss and the girls start getting Allison ready.

Something borrowed, something blue, something leopard print.
There is actually a pretty entertaining sequence involving these that Utah law prohibits me from sharing with you.
You should be sure to ask Allison about them the next time you see her though.

And then its off to the wedding site! Which, at The Canyons means…

…a gondola ride!

A brief moment to reflect at the top of the gondola.
“What does the future hold?”
“What will our children look like?”
“Did I leave the oven on?”

Stuff like that.

OK, brides – here’s a hot tip, so listen up.
If you have a young member of your bridal party – let’s say a ring-bearer…

…who is active and curious and you’re not entirely certain of his focus on the task at hand…

…it does WONDERS to bribe them for a job well done!

Letting them walk the dog down the aisle is a pretty good inducement as well.

We’re ready for liftoff!

OK, grooms – pay attention. Real men cry at their wedding. End of story.

And usually…

…everybody else does too.

Laughter is good too though.

Every Blooming Thing did the flowers and it was just gorgeous! Seriously, just jaw-dropping.
There’s a reason that they’re Florist of The Year. No, not in Utah….in the country.

Cake by Carrie’s Cakes. Perfect, in other words.

And of course there was a place for Gracie.

The toasts.

Funny…

…occasionally embarrassing…

…always heartfelt….

…and genuinely moving.

So these are their very unusual (and very cool) rings alongside Allison’s personal totem that she kept in her bouquet – her lucky bee.

First dance.

They had secretly prepared and they really kicked it up.

Which brings me to the band.

I had not had the pleasure of seeing The Sensations in action before and we were all in for a RIDE!

The Sensations bill themselves predominantly as a soul band.
But when I walk in and see a horn section, a percussionist, keys, three singers and brothers on both bass and kit, well there’s really only one thing I’m hoping for.

Funk.

You see, I grew up in the Detroit area, and one side effect of that is that I love 70′s funk.
When it comes to funk, I am a junky. Hit me on the one and you’ve got my attention. And keep your Doobie out my funk!
Have I made my point?

So when I saw them setting up I asked them off-handedly if they would be dropping some P-Funk on us (or some other feeble attempt at sounding hip).
They laughed and said that they’d see what they could do. I figured they were just making conversation, but I swear I saw a glint in Craig’s (drummer) eye…

Anyway, more on that later. For the next 3 hours Darrell, Renata and the band put everyone through their paces with DEEP renditions of soul, R&B and disco favorites.

Bandleader Darrell kept everyone motivated…

While Nick, Dan, Skip, Amp, Craig, Randy and Anthony laid down the law…

…and the law was ‘dance!’

Everyone followed the law.

Allison & Drew and company had arranged a sort of make-shift photo-booth for polaroids complete with a TON of costumes.

Allison’s bridesmaids had thought that she ought to have a special costume just for the occasion, so they bought her this really beautiful mask.

The mask started to make its rounds amongst the guests.

….and eventually bits of costume from the downstairs photo booth started to find their way to the dance floor…

…bit by bit…

…until it was basically Mardi Gras.

And then the band got into them.

And it was about that time during a song break that I heard a voice over the microphone ask
‘Hey, where’s your photographer?!! There he is! Mitch, this one’s for you!”

And they launched into a blistering rendition of Ohio Player’s ‘Fire‘ which merged into Parliaments ‘Give Up the Funk‘!

Darrell & Renata lead the crowd in their own signature dance number – ‘The Sensations Stomp’ or something like that.

After the demonstration of The Sensation’s funkmanship, Craig asked over the mic
“Is that funky enough for ya, Mitch!?”

It was. It was funky enough. Even for me.

Thanks guys!

Gracie was secretly hoping that they’d play ‘Atomic Dog‘, but she settled for petit fours.

Naturally it wouldn’t be a party if the band didn’t end up on the bar.

After the band had to say goodnight, Allison & Drew had everyone form a circle.
I wasn’t entirely sure what was happening but as the circle began to close in on itself – with ME in the middle – I had to make a quick choice!

So I hit my back in time to get some ‘under-handed’ shots of every guest doing a mass hand-huddle over my head.

I liked the movement and color on this one.

Allison & Drew – THANK YOU, to you and your families, for allowing me to be part of your extraordinary celebration, and for treating me as one of your guests.

Julia & Dan, Pt. 2 – “Reception on High Rock” | ZumaPhoto

In part 1 of Julia & Dan’s wedding day I indicated that viewers should stay tuned for part 2 which would be landing ‘soon’. I realize that 2 weeks is somewhat pushing the boundaries of ‘soon’, but Julia said that family and friends had been asking her about it constantly, so hopefully a little late is better then never. Thanks for your patience gang!

This was such a fun crowd and the love was palpable. Julia & Dan, you’ve got great people behind you and around you. Thank you for making me a part of it!

And so it came to pass that Julia and Dan departed Storm Mountain in order to make the pilgrimage (do they allow limos on pilgrimages?) to their reception site…

…at Rose Sachs Gardens.

( Nice segue, eh? That one’s for all of you match cut fans out there. All 3 of you. )

Flowers were by Scenemakers. Understated. Elegant. Gorgeous. End of story.

Most brides decide that they are over their bouquet at some point during the evening.
Julia was the first I’ve seen who just decided to put ‘em on ice.

Catering and service decor was by Culinary Crafts.
What can I say – they’re simply the best there is.

These were so cool: Gazpacho in cucumber cups! I had a sample – for research purposes only, of course – one delicious bite bursting with flavor.
Mmmmm….flavor…

The strawberries in keylime curd were such a big hit…

…that SOME people didn’t even get them to their plate.

Ok, so Dan (and I guess now Julia) is like a gigantic PBR devote. Even to the point that Dan contacted Pabst about possibly sponsering their reception.

I guess Pabst declined (missed opportunity guys) but the happy couple did incorporate it into the traditional encircled toast.

No wedding would be complete without the traditional ‘tossing of the kids’. Oh wait, its a bouquet that you’re supposed to toss….
I don’t know what this is then, but the crowed seemed to enjoy it so its all good.

I really don’t like to bother people when they’re eating….

…so I take that time to ‘borrow’ the client’s rings, run down to the pawnshop, sell them, have forgeries made, run back to the reception, take a few shots of the fakes, and then return them, all before the cake gets cut. If you’re inventive, photography can really be a pretty lucrative career.

Night descends…

…and the toasts begin.

Someone once told me (you know who you are) that the perfect formula for a toast was this:
- Make them laugh.
- Make them cry.
- Make it short.

These guys – every one – nailed it.

First dance.

Dancing with daddy.

And with mom.

And then a surprise special announcement. Evidently it was Dan’s birthday. Julia and her cohorts had a surprise for him.

I guess these skis are like made of gold or full of magic or something.

Dan was very pleased.

MANIACALLY pleased, actualy.

And there was much rejoicing and dancing.
